The Necessity of Perspective
The problem was never AI. It was people who stopped having a point of view.
I caught myself hosting quite the boring pity party last week. The subject: how everything looks like everything else now. I'd discover something, feel that small electric charge of new, and within twenty minutes my feed had served me 200 near-identical versions.
And I was right to be frustrated but I was wrong about why. Algorithmic sameness isn't what happens when technology gets too good. It's what happens when people stop being specific enough about who they are and what they actually see. The copy-paste problem isn't a tool problem. It's a perspective problem.
So this drop is a counter-argument. Not originality for its own sake. That's just novelty, and novelty is cheap. I mean work so shaped by individual experience that it could only have come from one person. Inspired, yes, but theirs.

Her installations aren’t asking questions. They’re making the unseen material, specific, and present enough to feel.

The premise of *Humanity Gone* is almost too on-the-nose for this newsletter: an angel whose wings are stolen by a man who wanted them for himself, now forced to navigate a world that shows her exactly what it is. Hay didn't need an algorithm to tell him what the moment called for. He already had the story. The one about what gets taken from you when someone decides your perspective is more useful to them than it is to you. The film is visually stunning, yes, but the images earn that description by actually doing something. This is work that could not have been generated, because it came from a specific wound.
Fernanda Castro
What's interesting isn't that Rosalía and Charli XCX wear Fernanda Castro. It's that they came looking for her after she had already built the vocabulary entirely on her own terms: fetishwear sensibility met with couture construction, chiffon ribbons woven into structured panels, see-through shorts finished with pleated trim, corseted shirts that read simultaneously as armor and exposure. The famous people arrived later. The point of view was already there, fully formed, waiting for the culture to catch up.
The antidote to copy-paste culture isn’t more originality. It’s more specificity. These three didn't solve the problem of algorithmic sameness. They just made it irrelevant.
